Inside visual productions at Ultra Music Festival with Vello Virkhaus

Ultra Music Festival is currently one of the biggest dance music festivals in the United States, amidst the most important week in dance music: Miami Music Week. This year, between both weekends, over 300,000 dance music fans from not only across the country, but from around the world, came to enjoy music from their favorite DJs.

However, the music isn't the only great part about everyone's sets. Each stage creates an experience for festival-attendees with all its visual components. But where does all that come from?

We got the chance to hang out on the production platform by the main stage at Ultra with V Squared Labs founder and VJ, Vello Virkhaus, who is an expert in the art of visual entertainment. V Squared Labs handles a lot of the visual components of festival and concert sets, music videos, and much more.

We were with Vello as he controlled the visuals during Laidback Luke's Ultra set at weekend 2, which were incredible! This year for Ultra, he also created the visual masterpieces behind the sets of Dirty South, Sander van Doorn, and more!

Vello said, "I have been creating immersive visuals, video mapping the Ultra stage over the past 10 years. I perform signature UMF looks as well as DJ the visuals live for each unique set. This year we created specialized visual content packs for DJs such as Dirty South, Datsik, and R3HAB."

Festivals aren't the only thing that Vello specializes in. He's worked on a number of projects including directing visuals for Billy Idol's "Scream" video, created audio reactive visuals for Coldplay’s "Speed Of Sound" video, which was nominated for MTVs 2005 Best Visual FX Award, and much more.
